ABSTRACT – Judah, one of Twelve. The Characterization of the disciple Judah according

to the Gospel of Matthew. The article aims at getting the narrative status of the character-

Judas in Matthew’s story without the traditional bias. The fundamental questions are:

what is the portrayal of Judas that is offered within the Matthean story? What is its impact

on the plot of the story? In that way, is the reader involved in the process of the character

building of Judas? From these questions it emerges the profile of a disciple, who was torn

by disappointment and desire for revenge, greed and repentance. In the figure of the

disciple Judas, the reader experiences the vertigo of human freedom in its ability to selfassertion

against God, but his repentance, even if it doesn’t actually reintegrate into the

communion of Christ, does not prevent him to testify in favour of the innocence of the

one who betrayed him.
