Summary
This article aims to explore the link between the Eucharist as sacramentum caritatis, the passion of Christ and the witness to Christ, according to Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas in fact qualifies the Eucharist as sacramentum caritatis because it is the highest sign of God’s love for humankind, a love which was expressed in the passion and death of Christ on the cross. By receiving the Eucharist, Christians are united to Christ, transformed into him through the action of the Holy Spirit so that they may live according to the same charity which motivated and sustained Christ in his activity. A Christian is called to manifest such a love throughout his entire life and especially in that supreme act of witness to Christ’s love which is martyrdom.
